It took 10 innings, but the Cincinnati Reds earned the series win on Wednesday night, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 11-7.
The top of the 10th inning was an eventful inning, with the Reds scoring 4 runs. The go-ahead run came on a Will Benson triple. TJ Friedl hit a two-run homer, and Luke Maile scored on a wild pitch by Orioles pitcher Keegan Akin to round out the scoring and give Cincinnati an 11-7 lead.
Alexis Diaz would earn the win on the mound in the 10th inning, striking out 3 while allowing just 1 run to give the Reds the win.
A lot of the scoring happened in the first two innings. Cincinnati scored 3 in the first, with Baltimore answering with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to give the Orioles a 4-3 lead. The Reds responded with 3 more runs in the 2nd inning to take a 6-4 lead.
The offense would pause until the 8th inning with Cincinnati scoring one run in the 8th on a Matt McClain groundout to give the Reds a 7-4 advantage. However, that would be short-lived as the Orioles would tie the game up at 7 with an RBI double by Jordan Westburg and a two-run home run by Adam Frazier to ultimately send it to extra innings, where the Reds would score 4 runs in the 10th to earn the win.
TJ Friedl went 3-5 with a home run and 3 RBI.
With the win, Cincinnati improves its record to 43-38 and moves back into first place in the NL Central, leading the 2nd place Milwaukee Brewers by 1/2 a game.
The Reds are off today. They’ll return to action Friday evening when they begin a 3-game series at Great American Ball Park against the San Diego Padres. Coverage on 103.9 WRBI begins at 4:40.
