Statehouse — State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) has requested 13 bills to go before the Indiana General Assembly during the 2023 session, including one that has garnered a lot of attention in the past.
Leising plans to reintroduce her cursive writing bill, which has passed the Senate numerous times before dying in the House.
“Many of our schools no longer teach cursive writing, and I know for some people they would say, ‘Who uses cursive writing?’, but you probably do every time you sign your name, you probably do if you have to read any kind of documents, even the letter from grandma that she wrote you on a card,” Leising said.
She adds workplace issues have resulted from a lack of one’s ability to read cursive writing.
“I have constituents tell me they’ve had to let people go in their job because they couldn’t read cursive and the job requires them to be able to read documents,” Leising said.
The 2023 legislative session begins next Monday.
