Maxwell, Cox, Sweet make track state podium, Maxwell gets Mental Attitude Award

At Saturday’s IHSAA Boys Track and Field State Finals in Bloomington, East Central’s Leo Maxwell was both a Top 8 podium finisher and the recipient of a very special honor.

Maxwell received the prestigious Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award for boys track and field.  Maxwell is a National Honor Society and Exemplary Honor Roll member (3.8 GPA).  He’s volunteered at the North Dearborn Food Pantry and EC’s Youth Football programs.  Maxwell also helped with the construction of new shot put and discus areas at the high school.

The son of John and Robin Maxwell, Leo will attend Purdue to study Kinesiology and compete in the Boilermakers track and field program.  A $1000 scholarship was presented to East Central High School by the IHSAA, on behalf of Farm Bureau Insurance, in the name of Leo Maxwell.

Maxwell also placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 59’2.75″.

There were two other area athletes who also earned a state medal.  Franklin County’s Chad Cox took fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6’7″ and Connersville’s Parker Sweet snagged eighth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.98.

  • Milan’s Benjamin Riehle- 21st in the 400 dash.
  • Franklin County’s Jacob Schatzle- 10th in the long jump.
  • Rising Sun’s Kendal Montgomery- 23rd in the long jump.
  • Lawrenceburg’s 400 relay of Hayden Saylor, Alexander Witte, Brayden Combs and Dahya Patel- 23rd.
