The girls softball sectional tournament is underway. Here are recaps from Monday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 24. There may be updates, so please check back.
On Monday in 2A-45 action at Switzerland County, South Ripley ousted Austin 14-2.
The Raiders got three hits with a double from Alexa Heidt, two singles and two ribbies from Julia Helton and two hits by Ellie Waldron. Waldron ended the game by run rule in the sixth with a three-run homer. Mady Tompkins pitched the first five frames for the win and fanned 11.
Also at Switz, North Decatur topped Southwestern Hanover 10-3.
The Chargers broke the game open with seven runs in the home sixth. Sarah Swain and Kayln Muckerhide both had three hits. Muckerhide’s trio included a triple. Kennedy Stier and Raegan Nobbe contributed two hits apiece. Keesha Crosland pitched a complete game with 16 strikeouts.
Ashley Fulton had three hits for the Rebels. Emily Hatton and Morgan Mahoney both collect two. Riley Scroggins drove in two runs and Hatton batted in one.

At 1A-60 in Rising Sun, Hauser cruised to a 15-0 final against Oldenburg.
Jets pitchers Kaydence Gates and Paige McDaniel combined on a two-hitter with five strikeouts. The ladies from Hope got three hits and two RBI from Maley Jordan, four ribbies on two hits from Reagan Johnson and a pair of singles and RBI to match from Kyra Meister.

As heard on the Sports Voice at 3A-29 in Brookville, host Franklin County defeated Lawrenceburg 6-2.
The Cats took advantage of five Tiger errors but did get two RBI on an infield single and a sac fly from Anne Becker, a sac fly RBI, single and double from Kassidy Schell and a ribbie on a bunty by Bree Bischoff. KK Ferman struck out 10 in her complete game effort from the circle.
While Lawrenceburg struggled defensively, the Tigers Maci McAdams had the play of the game with a diving catch in right center field.

On Tuesday, our broadcasts back at Franklin County saw both South Dearborn and Connersville score big wins. The Knights beat Batesville 16-1.
SD’s Emma Seaver had four hits with a double and three RBI, Kori Cornett collected two hits, a ribbie and four stolen bases while Malyia Schnebelt singled twice with two RBI. Pitcher Kyra Labazo held the Bulldogs to just five hits. Two came from Renee Lecher who knocked in the only run for BHS.
In game two, it was the Spartans over Greensburg 14-1.
For Connersville, Baylie Spurlock and McKenna Lucas had two hits and an RBI. Lucas tripled. Rayleigh Bresher batted in four runs with three coming on a monster three-run homer and Paige Dunaway drove in two on a double. Starting pitcher Shelby Wolski went four innings for the win and gave up just two hits. The single by Carlee Adams produced the Pirates only run.

In a 2A-45 semifinal at Switzerland County, South Ripley shut out Milan 6-0.
Alexa Heidt drover in a pair of Raider runs while Julia Hilton and Morgan Meyer had a ribbie each. Pitchers Mady Tompkins and Ellie Waldron combined on a two-hitter. Tompkins allowed no hits and struck out eight over five innings. Chloe Hunter and Kenzie Sealy had two late inning hits for the Indians.
Switz got by North Decatur 4-3 in the other semi.
Maddie Duvall of the Swiss had one of the team’s six hits and recorded the club’s only RBI. Pacer pitcher Lily Sparks fanned 16 and surrendered just three hits to the Chargers.

In other sectionals of interest, Rising Sun defeated Jac-Cen-Del 11-0 and Hauser downed South Decatur 12-0.
In Hauser’s win over South Decatur, Jets pitchers Kaydence Gates and Paige McDaniel combined on a one-hitter with seven strikeouts. Loryn Pate had the only Cougar hit.
Lucie Asher and Hannah Taylor both homered for Hauser. Asher had three hits and four RBI. Taylor tallied two hits and two ribbies. McDaniel and Isabella Bruner both had three hits and each player legged out a triple.

And at 4A-14 hosted by Bloomington North, East Central lost 10-0 to Columbus North.
