Southeast Indiana volleyball teams who have been fortunate to win a sectional have also, unfortunately, fallen victim in the subsequent regional semifinal.  That was not the case Saturday for Greensburg.

In a 3A regional semi at Charlestown, coach June Rigney’s bunch beat the highest ranked team in the field of four as the Pirates were a 3-2 winner over 10th ranked Evansville Memorial.  They upset the Tigers in come-from-behind-fashion.

GCHS lost the first set 25-14 but evened the score with a 25-22 victory in set two. Greensburg fell behind again dropping the third game in extra play 28-26, but once again, battle back to square the match with a 25-23 win in set four.  Then the Pirates made program history with a 15-11 victory in the tie breaker to advance to the Elite 8 for the first-time ever.

Unfortunately, Greensburg could not work any more magic in the regional final as they lost to 15th ranked Silver Creek in straight sets 25-22, 25-15 and 25-17. For the Dragons, it was their fourth regional championship in the last five years.

For the Pirates, it was their third regional appearnce in the last four seasons.  The Lady Bucs conclude the 2021 campaign with a 22-7 record.
