Greensburg, IN —Fair projects took a whole new avenue this year for the 4-H fair due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Project judging took place in empty buildings without the sounds, smells, and spirit of the Decatur County Fair. Some participants were able to choose a virtual fair if they were not comfortable coming to the fair due to the pandemic, where they were able to submit photos of their projects to be judged.
Projects were to be checked-in to their respective building by Monday or Tuesday, depending on if it was a perishable or non-perishable item. They were then able to find out the results of their hard work on Wednesday afternoon.
First-year 4-H member Marvin Mauer, son of Tim and Maria Mauer, stated he enjoyed building his 1/64th Fertilizer Scene as he does this kind of project for fun all the time at home. Marvin ended up taking away Grand Champion in his category, competing against kids of all ages. Marvin stated that he looks forward to showing Beef Cattle in the Arena in the future as he has beef cattle at home that he tends to with his mom. Marvin also submitted projects in beef, corn, and soybeans.
