Greensburg, IN—According to Letts Community Volunteer Fire Chief Matthew Morrow, Monday afternoon, the Letts Fire Department was contacted by South Decatur High School to investigate an odor they had in the school building.
The Letts Fire department responded and investigated. The firefighters were met and directed to the area of the odor. Firefighters checked the area with a multi-gas detector. The detector alerted to the presence of gas. The rooms that were affected were evacuated and Vectren Energy was contacted by Decatur County Communications.
The gas leak was isolated by firefighters and maintenance staff. The firefighters were able to go directly to the valve and shut it off. The valve location was known by the firefighters due to the pre-planning and inspection of the school building. Vectren arrived and the valve was turned back on to pinpoint the leak. After the leak was found the valve was turned back off and locked out. County School administration will be working to have contractors fix the piping. Morrow stated that at no time were the students or staff in any immediate danger.
