Herbert M. Raper, 70, of Versailles passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at his home. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 17, 1948 the son of Norman and Mattie Midgett Raper. Survivors include one brother Ronald (Debbie) Raper of Versailles, along with several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles. Herbert was a 1967 graduate of South Ripley High School. He was inducted into the US Army on May 1, 1968 and served in Vietnam with the 1st Battalion of the 92nd Artillery, rising to the rank of SP4. For service to his country Herbert received the Good Conduct Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was also classified as a rifle marksman. He was discharged from the Army on April 30, 1974 and returned to Versailles to help his father on the farm. Funeral services will be held at 4pm on Saturday, February 23rd at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Randy Thieman, minister of the Versailles Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will begin at 3pm. Memorials may be given to the Cliff Hill Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
