Off-duty trooper scuttles shoplifting attempt

Connersville, In. — An off-duty Indiana State police officer thwarted a shoplifting attempt at the Walmart in Connersville Monday.

Reports indicate an employee shouted and pointed at a female in the parking lot as the officer approached the store in his marked car. As the officer closed in on the woman, later identified as Ashley Renee Goins, 29, of Anderson, she got into a car with another woman.

As the officer began to process the information the women attempted to start the car and flee, however the other woman in the car prevented her escape. Goins then exited the car and began to struggle with the officer in the parking lot.

The other woman again helped the officer get Goins into custody.

The officer suffered minor injuries.

Goins has been charged with battery on a police officer, possession of a stolen vehicle and criminal conversion.
