William Chester “Bill” Hammons, 86, of Dillsboro passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 at High Point Health in Lawrenceburg. William was born Saturday, September 10, 1932 in London, Kentucky the son of Walter and Nannie (Truitt) Hammons. He married Virginia Phipps October 16, 1954 and she survives. He retired from Thatcher Glass / Anchor Glass in 1990. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He loved to tinker with motors – cars, motorcycles and semis, loved cycle riding on his 1975 Harley Davidson, former owner and operator of Bills’ Sinclair in Dillsboro in late 1950’s and enjoyed his 1925 Chevy “Old Jed”.
Bill is survived by wife Virginia, sons William W. (Cindy) Hammons of Missouri and David L. Hammons of Milan, daughter Rhonda (Ron) Amm of Dillsboro, brother Delbert (Earnestine) Hammons of Lily, Kentucky, sisters Christine Proffitt of Lexington, Kentucky and Kitty (Jerry) Cheek of London, Kentucky, grandchildren Christopher (Jessica) Hammons, Cory (Liz) Hammons, Alyssa Hammons and Ronald “RJ” Amm, great grandson Jaxton Hammons and great granddaughter Keira. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and sister Leona Lacy.
A service celebrating his life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given in honor of Bill to the Alzheimer Fund or the American Cancer Fund.
