Greensburg, In. — Decatur County candidates for sheriff met about 75 voters last night at the Farm bureau annual meeting.
Democrat David Durant and Republican Bill Meyerrose both want to find alternative ways to help those dealing with addictions. Current policies and approaches aren’t helping people make substantive life changes.
Drug Policy
Meyerrose wants to create a full-time detective position to handle information gleaned from traffic stops, investigations and arrests. He says currently there is no one to handle this information, only uniformed deputies. He added that the person in this position would also investigate crimes other than drugs as well.
Durant proposed collaborating with Indiana State Police and Greensburg police in order to d=create a task force. He countered the task force would encourage information sharing across agencies and increase efficiencies.
Pay & Retention
Both candidates say pay for deputies, especially those who work in the jail must be examined. All acknowledge newly implemented taxes cannot be the only solution, but steps must be taken to make these jobs competitive with similar positions with other departments.
