One arrested following New Point disturbance

New Point, In. — A New Point man is in jail following a dispute and chase with police.

A report from police says John Hammond, 48, got into an argument with a resident of a home in the 6900 block of County Road 640 North Monday evening. The report says following an altercation Hammond grabbed a shotgun and fired at a relative that was standing about 15 to 25 yards away.

The relative ran to the home of a neighbor to call 911.

Hammond fled the scene and was pursued by the New Point town marshal before being captured by the town marshal and Indiana State Police at the Petro Truck Stop.

Hammond has been charged with possession of a firearm by a violent felon, intimidation, criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement.
