Grant fuels smoke detector program in Decatur County

Greensburg, In. — With a $5,000 grant from the Decatur County Community Fund through the American Red Cross firefighters and volunteers will install smoke detectors in area homes. Tuesday, August 15 and Friday, August 18 volunteers from Delta Faucet and the Greensburg Fire Department will install the life saving devices.

As part of the “Home Fire Safety Campaign” the volunteers will go door-to-door in certain neighborhoods to speak with residents and properly install smoke detectors where needed.

Data from the National Fire Protection says three of every five residential fire fatalities resulted in cases where there was no smoke alarm or not a working smoke alarm.

Smoke detector batteries should be changed every six months and the alarm should be replaced at least every 10 years.
