Westport residents lose power after semi accident

DECATUR COUNTY, Ind. — Several Decatur County REMC customers in and around Westport lost power yesterday after a semi hauling feeder pigs turned over near the covered bridge near Westport.

According to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred around 10:30 AM, which knocked down an electric pole and caused the widespread power outage.

Police say the driver was traveling east on County Road 1100 South near County Road 300 West, when the weight of the pigs shifted during the turn and caused the tractor-trailer to roll, striking the power pole.

The driver of the truck was not injured, but a passenger, as well as some of the pigs, sustained injuries in the accident.

The Decatur County REMC reported that power was restored by 4:10 PM.

The road was closed for approximately four hours.
