500 chickens die in fire near Versailles

Versailles, IN — Several agencies responded to a structure fire shortly late Thursday morning on the 44oo block of State Road 129 south of Versailles.

Firefighters arriving on the scene found two vehicles fully engulfed along with a barn, garage, and a chicken coop.

The flames threatened a nearby residence but firefighters were able to contain the blaze, which prevented damage to the home and several other outbuildings.

However, about 500 chickens were lost in the fire.

There were no reports of any humans being injured.

The cause of the fire was not listed.

Responding agencies included Versailles Fire Rescue, the Friendship, Osgood, and Napoleon volunteer fire departments, the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, and Ripley County EMS.
