(Greensburg, IN) — More than 80 young runners laced up their shoes and hit the track last week as the Decatur County Youth Running Club wrapped up its 14th annual running clinic — capping four days of drills, life lessons and friendly competition with a one-mile race that produced three new club records.

The clinic, held June 1–4, brought together students in grades 2 through 8 from across Decatur County. More than 30 volunteers — including local high school runners, college athletes and area coaches — led the group through running games, dynamic stretches and warm-ups each day.
This year’s theme was “Run your R.A.C.E.!” — with each letter representing a daily lesson. Monday focused on getting Ready (proper nutrition, gear and gradual mileage buildup); Tuesday on Attitude (positivity and resilience); Wednesday on Competing (pacing and race strategy); and Thursday on running their “R.A.C.E. with Everything” in a live one-mile race.
Guest speakers included Former Franklin College Track & Cross Country Coach Paul Sargent, Zionsville Track and Cross Country Coach Gabe Porras, IU Indianapolis Track and Cross Country Athlete Thomas Gorman, Purdue University Extension Community Wellness Coordinator Catherine Niese, Former Greensburg Track and Cross Country athlete Emma Wilmer, and Occupational Therapist and lifelong runner Kelsey Puckett.
Three Club Records Fall on Race Day
Thursday’s mile race was the highlight of the week — and history was made. Three DCYRC records were broken: Miranda Moore won the 2nd-grade girls race in 7:13, Gianna Scholle won the 6th-grade girls race in 6:11, and Nolan Hash won the 7th & 8th-grade boys race in a blazing 5:40.
The top three finishers in each age group earned gold, silver and bronze medals. All participants received DCYRC water bottles, backpacks and completion certificates.
