Rita Holman

Rita Stevens Holman, 89 years old of Southgate, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023. A devoted wife and mother, she focused all her love and energy into her family. Raised as a foster child, Rita took pride in sewing her children’s clothes, making cookies & fudge during the holidays, and nurturing her family with love that she didn’t always receive as a child. She loved to work in the yard and tend to her flower and vegetable gardens. After the harvest she made her produce last throughout the year by canning, freezing and making jellies. Rita enjoyed cutting the grass but refused to use the riding mower and instead would push mow the yard for five hours. She never learned how to drive a car and although her husband, Don, tried to teach her once, it was also the last time he tried to teach her. Born with a great sense of humor and the gift of gab, Rita loved to talk and made friends wherever she went. She cared deeply for those in her community and was always offering to help others with laundry and dinner.

Rita will be deeply missed by her children Randy (Linda) Holman, Donna (Herb) Zahnle, Debbie (Will) Summey, and Dave (Patty) Holman; siblings Eugene Andrews and Betty Lamping; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Rita is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Don; siblings Gerald Stevens, Charlene Bushman, Arvilla Schumacher, Alice Meyer, Alvera Michelowitz, and Jean Haas; and mother Mary Stevens.

The Holman family will receive family and friends from 10:00am – 11:00am on Thursday, April 27 at Holy Guardian Angel Church in Cedar Grove, IN. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00am with Fr. Vince Lampert presiding and burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Holy Guardian Angel Cemetery Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.
