3-run 5th inning by Padres doom Reds in loss

The fifth inning proved to be the Reds downfall in Monday night’s 8-3 loss to the San Diego Padres.

After a Nick Senzel home run in the top of the 4th the Reds led 3-2. The Padres, however, would have an answer in the fourth as Trent Grisham knocked in a run to tie the game at 3-3.

San Diego would take the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning as Ha-Seong Kim hit a three-run home run to give the Padres a 6-3 lead.

Manny Machado would knock-in two more runs in the bottom of the 8th to give San Diego the 8-3 win.

Luke Weaver pitched 4 and 1/3 innings in the loss, striking out 3 while giving up 4 earned runs.  The reigning National Player of the Week, Nick Senzel, went 3-4 at the plate with a home run and an RBI.

With the loss, Cincinnati drops to 12-17 on the season.

The Reds return to Petco Park for game 2 of the series tonight. Coverage will air on 103.9 WRBI at 9:10 pm, with the  first pitch at 9:40 pm.
