If you don’t believe going deep in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t help recruiting, then you have not followed what is taking place at Purdue University. Matt Painter does not like McDonald’s All-Americans because they are usually “one and done” players; however, he likes to get players just below that level because they tend to stay at least 3, if not 4, years.
This coming year he has red-shirt freshman Emmanuel Dowuona, a 6’10” center who went to high school in Georgia, and 3 more incoming freshmen. They are: Isiah Thompson of Zionsville who is a 6′ guard, Mason Gillis of New Castle, a 6’7″ small forward, and Brandon Newman, a 6’4″ shooting guard from Valporaiso. You will notice that 3 of the 4 recruits are from Indiana and they are all on Indiana’s All-Star basketball team.
They also have an inside track on getting Ebenezer Dowuona, brother of Boiler Emmanuel mentioned above. Another possibility is LJ Cryer of Katy, Texas (Carson Edwards territory), and 2 more Indiana prospects–Trey Galloway of Culver Academy and Jaden Ivey of Mishawaka Marian.
Winning late in the year definitely has its advantages.
