History of Athletic Training

Today athletic trainers are commonplace in high school, college, and pro sporting events.  This profession got its start in 1950.  The National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) was established.  In 1970 a curriculum specific to athletic training was born.  Then in 1982 it became a college major.

In 1990 the American Medical Association deemed athletic training a health profession.  In 2004 those who had this major needed to pass Board Certification in order to practice.  According to an online article by Skylar (mentioned in last Friday’s article), as of 2008 39% of the athletic trainers worked at schools and universities.  I am sure today this number is much higher.

Tomorrow I will write about the “Father of Athletic Training”.  Many of you may know some of his relatives.
