This is a Huddle Up dealing with a couple things I like and dislike about the current world of sports. First the likes. I like the way the powers to be have increased the emphasis on safety in sports, and secondly, I like the number of venues now available to young kids for their first experiences at sports.
On the other side of the coin, I not only dislike what AAU is doing to sports, but I fear for the future of high school sports because of it. My second big dislike in sports is the way high school athletes are being forced to choose one sport as a freshman in the hopes that they will just concentrate on that one. Some systems at the high school level require so much of an athlete’s time that they are not able to play a second sport and still maintain their grades. There will be more about this in a later Huddle Up.
