2 jailed after failed Columbus PD break-in

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus police say two men tried to break-in to their police department garage overnight Monday.

Around 4:40 a.m., a Columbus officer sitting in his car saw two people looking in the window of the police garage. One suspect had their face covered in a bandanna, police said.

The officer started his car and the suspects ran to another vehicle and drove away which led to a traffic stop.

“After interviewing the occupants of the vehicle, the officers determined that the suspects intended to burglarize the police garage and wrecked patrol cars on the property but were interrupted when they were spotted by the officer who was parked at the garage,” the Columbus Police Department said in a news release.

20-year-old Zachary Deberry, of Columbus, was arrested on preliminary charges of attempted theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. A 17-year-old was also charged with attempted theft and marijuana possession.
