17-year-old arrested in connection with theft from vehicles

Batesville, In. — Police in Batesville have a 17-year-old suspect is in custody in connection with several thefts from vehicles.

While on a routine patrol, officers observed a male standing near a vehicle in the 900 block of Columbus Avenue Tuesday, January 15 around 4:50 a.m. When the officer closed in, the suspect fled the area.

The officer followed footprints in the snow other vehicles in the area and made contact with the residents. Items reported stolen were change and a handgun.

After police identified a 17-year-old as a possible suspect a search warrant was served and the handgun was recovered. The 17-year-old was taken into custody and released to his parents pending formal charges.

Major Brad Wessel with the Batesville Police Department says keep doors and windows locked, keep valuables out of open view and remove them from the car when possible.
