Train Accidents In Osgood, Union County In Last Week

A car parked on railroad tracks was struck by a CSX train in Osgood Saturday morning.

Osgood Town Marshall Eric Roush said no one was hurt but the driver of the car is now facing misdemeanor charges for driving while suspended.

There were three occupants in the vehicle that were in the process of moving homes, Roush indicated. They safely escaped before the collision with the train, which demolished the vehicle. No word on why the car was stopped on the railroad tracks.

The CSX train reportedly weighed 5,000 tons and was approximately 7,000 ft. long. The legal speed limit for a train there is 40 miles per hour, the involved train was traveling at 36 mph prior to the accident, Roush said.

“It was an unfortunate accident but could have turned out a lot worse,” Roush said.

Authorities were on the scene for upwards of four hours gathering statements from both parties involved. The male driver of the vehicle was cited for driving while suspended.

The identity of those involved has not been released as part of the ongoing investigation.

The accident marked the second in a week for a CSX train involved in a crash in Southeast Indiana.

On Sat., April 19, a farmer in Union County was injured after a train collided with his John Deere sprayer near the town of Cottage Grove.

Driver Ryan Vogelsang, 50, was transported to a nearby hospital for chest pain.

Investigators said he was operating the sprayer on a private lane when he crossed railroad tracks and the train struck the tank area of the sprayer.
