Remember the stranded motorist that allegedly stole money twice from a Batesville couple in March?

After an investigation and assistance from other law enforcement agencies, Batesville Police say they know who did it.

“There were similar reports made to neighboring law enforcement agencies by complainants that described the same scamming technique used by the suspect in the Batesville incident,” Batesville Police Chief Stan Holt said Monday.

Led by Detective Blake Roope, Batesville Police worked with police in Ohio, including the Harrison Police Department and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office to gather information and identify a suspect.

The six week investigation led to Michael Chad O’Toole, 38, of Cincinnati.

Prosecutors in Ripley County have charged O’Toole with Theft (class D felony). The suspect is currently incarcerated in a Hamilton County Correctional facility awaiting extradition to Indiana.

The investigation began after the Batesville couple stopped to help what was believed to be a stranded motorist. Money was given to help with a mechanical problem on the vehicle.

The following day, the suspect came to the home of the couple and allegedly stole a wallet that contained several credit cards, money and other personal information.
