St. Nicholas And Greensburg Battle It Out In Volleyball

VolleyballSt. Nicholas Splits with Greensburg: Greensburg takes 7th grade match, but St. Nicholas Claims the 8th grade match.

It was a great night of volleyball on Thursday evening at Milan Elementary. Greensburg’s 7th grade defeated St. Nick in 2 sets with scores of 9-25 and 17-25. St. Nicholas top server was Ella Fledderman who served 12/12 with 4 Ace serves.

The 8th grade match was intense. These 2 teams have met now 6 times over the last 2 years in regular season and tourney championships each year. St. Nicholas has defeated the Pirates 8th grade each time, but EACH time proved to be a challenge and excellent volleyball for both teams. St. Nicholas 8th grade won in 3 sets with scores of 25-13 and 25-24.

After winning set 1 quickly, set 2 was a battle. Greensburg came out on top of their game, and they utilized their height advantage much more effectively to slow down St. Nick. Greensburg had a 19-11 point lead, but St. Nick NEVER quit. They slowly came back into the match. The score ended up at 24-24 with a 25 point cap.  Greensburg served; both teams volleyed the ball back and forth; it actually went back and forth 4 times before St. Nicholas ended the match with a game winning kill.

Amelia Hartman stepped up in a HUGE way and went 10/10 serving; Erica Kathman served 9/10 with 2 Aces; and Molly Gregg served 12/13 with 4 Aces. Kathman and Gregg anchored the net. Katelynn Bischoff assisted with some setting duties and great defense, and Rachel Kraus played consistently all the way around. Ella Fledderman was able to attack the ball consistently and passed the ball well all evening. It was a total team effort all around.

St. Nicholas plays their final match on Tuesday, September 30 at Milan Elementary.
