Spring Sports

March 12, 2014

Here we are in the second week of March and we are still wondering whether spring is really going to come this year.  Just last week at this time we were still dealing with a March snowstorm.  Two  years ago we had 80 degree days already.  In just one week it will officially be spring on the calendar but we have no guarantees the weatherman will cooperate.  In less than 3 weeks all spring sports will be scheduled to play.  I wonder if any of them will be ready.

Next week they have a full week of make-up days and the following week is Spring Break.  Every spring coach dreads the two-week spring break decision.  Even though families were told that the first week would be make-up days many of them are leaving town anyway.  This means there will be two weeks of limited practice for all the sports.  As soon as the athletes get back to full school, they are expected to be ready to go in their spring games.

If the weather doesn’t improve quickly, most of the practice will have occurred inside.  You can’t really simulate the outdoor environment, and we know a ball bounces much different on a wooden floor than it does on the ground.  I haven’t found a gymnasium large enough to allow discus practice inside.  Get out your overcoats.  This may be one of those years!

22nd Annual Metamora Grad School... @ Old School Grounds Shelter House
Sep 5 @ 12:00 pm
This is a casual reunion for anyone who ever attended Metamora Grade School, and an excellent opportunity to reminisce about the good ‘ole days at Metamora School. Take yourself back in time as you visit with some of your former schoolmates. The Metamora School days are remembered by many from this era as days of hardships, yet they also remain as some of their fondest memories of youth. The school has been gone about 36 years now, since about 1979. Please feel welcome to bring your family, old photographs or class pictures, or any old school mementos. All ages are welcome. Attendance in past years has ranged from 25 – 100. This event is very informal and will begin with a pitch-in lunch at noon. Dress appropriately for visiting at the outside, open shelter. Restrooms are available a couple hundred yards away at the State Building. Please bring a covered dish and your own beverage. Let’s keep our memories of the old school alive as long as we’re alive. Call Jim Hunter at 812-350-8253 for more information.
