Russell Oliver Smith, 92, of Lawrenceburg, IN, passed away Monday, January 20, 2014.

He was born Saturday, November 19, 1921 in South Bend, Indiana, Son of the late Oliver Nelson Smith and the late Luella Sherman Smith.

Russell served his Country as a member of the United States Navy during WWII.  He was the Manager of General Accounting  for Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc., retiring after over 23 years of service.  He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. Russell used to be a Boy Scout Troop Committee man in Waldwick, NJ.

Surviving are his wife of over 62 years, Sonia E. Wine Smith of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; Children, Deborah Jane (Husband, Francis) Novakowski of Bradenton, FL, Stephanie  Ann  (husband, James) Rindelaub of Plano, TX, David Scott ( wife, Debbie) Smith of Mishawaka, IN; Grandchildren, Eric Allan Baker, Steven Andrew Baker, Matthew David Rindelaub, Alexa Elise Smith, Caleb David Smith, Noah Samuel Smith and Jesse Elijah Smith;

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Friends will be received from 12:00 Noon -2:00 pm Friday, January 24, 2014 at the Rullman Hunger Funeral Home, Aurora, Indiana.

Services will be held at the Funeral Home, Friday at 2:00 pm immediately following visitation.

Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery,  Aurora, IN  47001.  Military graveside services will be conducted by members of local Veterans Service Organizations.

Volunteers are need for all-day or half-day butterfly counts at the Big Oaks National Wildlife Reserve. Bring water, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks or lunch and binoculars and meet at the refuge office on Saturday morning August 1 between 7:45 am – 8 am. A $3.00 donation to the North American Butterfly Association for those participating in the count would be appreciated. Survey teams will be divided up based on the length of time you wish to spend in the field. Contact Joe Robb at joe_robb@fws.gov to register.
