A raccoon is to blame for an electric outage that impacted thousands of households in the area Sunday night.
Power was out for homes in Osgood, Napoleon, Delaware, North Vernon and Decatur County. It impacted customers that receive electric from Duke Energy, Southeastern Indiana REMC and Decatur County REMC.
“A raccoon got into the Hoosier substation in Napoleon and came in contact with high voltage,” said Southeastern Indiana REMC spokesperson Barry Lauber.
Some residents lost electricity for less than ten minutes while others were out of power for a few hours. Power has been restored to homes in the region.
Update (May 4 @ 10:57 p.m.)
The lights have turned on for some residents in the Osgood area Sunday night. Representatives at Duke Energy estimate power to be restored by 11:30 p.m.
First Report (May 4 @ 10:33 p.m.)
Thousands of homes are without power across Ripley and Jennings County Sunday evening.
Duke Energy had 1,250 households without power in Ripley County at 10:30 p.m. Local REMC customers are also reporting power outages as well. Multiple reports have indicated outages impacting Osgood, Napoleon and North Vernon.
The Ripley County Sheriff’s Office has fielded dozens of calls related to the power outage and confirmed it is not related to an automobile accident.
