DECATUR COUNTY – Two fire departments in Decatur County have been awarded funding in Volunteer Fire Assistance grants.

The Greensburg Fire Department and the Burney-Clay Township Volunteer Fire Department are receiving $5,000 each. The money can go toward training, installation of dry hydrants, or to purchase necessary firefighting equipment and personal protective gear in an effort to increase safety.

The grants are administered by the DNR Division of Forestry and made available through the USDA Forest Service. DNR officials review grant applications and select recipients on the basis of population density, acres of public wildlands protected, and wildland fire reporting to DNR Fire Control Headquarters.

More than $194,000 was awarded to 44 departments in Indiana.

Fire departments interested in applying for VFA grant opportunities should contact Crystal Hunt, Program Coordinator at Fire Control Headquarters at (765) 342-4701.
