A Ripley County man is one of just 18 individuals in Indiana to be recognized with the 2014 Golden Hoosier Award. The honor celebrates senior citizens who have dedicated their lives to the improving their cities and towns through community service.
Joseph “Wayne” Peace of Osgood received the honor for his work with veterans. A decorated Vietnam Veteran himself, he received two Combat Wounded Purple Heart awards while he served our country. Today, Joseph continues to give back to his community as he assists Ripley County Veterans applying for health care benefits.
For over 25 years, he has logged countless hours and miles as he travels to meet with Veterans. His name is popular amongst his peers and he is known for his dedication, compassion, and extensive knowledge of the VA system.
The awards have been presented by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Aging since 2008.
Award recipients were nominated by members of their communities who were impacted by their volunteer efforts. The recipients and their nominators attended the luncheon where the winners received an award and recognition for their commitment to serving their communities from Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann.
“The individuals who receive this award have spent countless hours volunteering in their communities to make Indiana a great place to call home,” said Lt. Governor Ellspermann. “These selfless individuals are role models to many and I challenge Hoosiers to follow their examples.”
