One and Done revisited

The real problem with “one and done” is what happens to the kids after they sign the big contract.  First and foremost, some simply don’t make it after one year in the pros.  Secondly, this is nice money but it is also money that they have never had in their hands before.  Too much of this money gets spent on foolishness; and, when you consider the average pro life is less than 5 years, they are out of their money very quickly.

The pro teams try to help these young men with investing their money, but few of them listen to the advice.  They spend this money on fast cars, questionable girlfriends, and partying with their buddies.  Let’s face it, that is what they have always done with whatever money they have had.

If you keep these kids in school 3 years, they must pass classes to stay eligible; and thus, they will get some kind of education.  Universities can provide great tutoring services for these young men and then, if they don’t make it in the pros, they at least have some college education to hopefully fall back on.  Not all of them can join ESPN as announcers!
