Osgood lost another great veteran on Monday, October 17. Omer Russell Flint, age 81, the son of the late Russel and Clara (Arney) Flint, passed away at the Decatur County Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in New Marion on January 1, 1935. He married Donna Jean Fuqua with whom he had his three children. She preceded him in death in 1986. Later he married Mary Shook, who also preceded him in death. As a proud Vietnam veteran, he had served his country for over twenty years in the United States Air Force.

Following his service career, Omer was hired on in Greensburg in the maintenance department for Crown-Zellerbach, which later became known as James Rivers. He retired after nearly 20 years. He was a member of the Osgood Christian Church. Omer was an active member of the Osgood American Legion and the North Vernon Eagles. He had been a past member of the Am-Vets and the VFW. Many attendees of the Osgood-area Kiwanis’ winter basket and bag bingo held each year at the Osgood American Legion will remember him and sadly miss him. He was the one who made sure the bingo machine was working accurately and would peek in during the bingo to make sure everything was still running smoothly. He would smile and wave after he made sure everything was all right.

Omer enjoyed camping and fishing along with his wife Mary and earlier on with his children.  An animal lover, he enjoyed his cats and dogs. But he mostly just enjoyed tinkering around the house and fixing anything that had broken down. It was said, “It was good to have him around!”

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Sandra Lynn Norman, and his son Dean Russell Flint. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Cecil and Gene Flint and his sister Rovena Matthews.

Survivors include his daughter Cinda Jo Richardson (Dillsboro); grandchildren Christopher Flint, Shawn Richardson, Jeremy Slone, Scott Slone, and Jennifer Slone; several great-grandchildren; his brother Miles Flint (Greensburg); and his sister Geraldine Fuqua (Osgood).

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Friday, October 21 at Neal’s Funeral Home in Osgood. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by the funeral service at 12 noon. Burial will be in the Greendale Cemetery in Osgood.

Memorials may be made to the Osgood American Legion.
