Oliver Branson, 88, of Holton passed away at 5:30am Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville. He was born at Viper in Perry County, Kentucky on January 26, 1928 the son of Samp and Altis Turner Branson. Survivors include one son Roy Branson of Holton; one granddaughter Jannie (Matthew) Jackson of Westport; one great-grandson Connor; two brothers Jim (June) Branson of Versailles and Roger (Nancy) Branson of Connersville; five sisters Eva (Dale) Combs of Franklin, Ohio, Evola (Bill) House of New Albany, Ada (Larry) McIntire of Scipio, Vada (Bob) Browne of New Washington, and Teresa (Daniel) Bowman of Queensville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth Branson, and his sisters Jean Grigsby and Betty Brashear. Mr. Branson was an Army veteran of WWII and the Korean War entering the service on January 12, 1946 and being discharged on June 26, 1947. He re-entered the Army on June 22, 1949 and was discharged o December 1, 1952. For his military service Cpl. Branson received the WWII Victory Medal and also the Army Occupation of Japan Medal. In civilian life Oliver had a variety of different jobs, but his main occupation was being a self-employed carpenter. In his earlier days he worked in the almond fields of California as well as the potato fields of Maine. He also had worked as a coal miner in Perry County, Kentucky, the power plant at Madison, and also the Glasstron Boat Company in Madison. Oliver gave of his time and talents to help construct the Educational Building for the Shelby Christian Church of which he was a member. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 1st at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Dale Day and Bro. Tim Heim officiating. Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the Shelby Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
