Old Fogy Golf

I probably will get a lot of grief for this title, but this what a lot of my friends call their weekly golf excursions. Batesville has a large group that either travels to North Branch on Mondays or some other local course and plays a good round of golf. After golf I think they spend a little time at the 19th hole. Unless you do not like to be with people, this is a great way to enjoy your retirement years. First of all, you get to shoot the **** (or something like that) and second, there are many ways to set up a sporting proposition that adds just a little more interest to the game. Most of them play for nickels and dimes, so even if your golf is a bit lacking in skill, you won’t lose the car on a game. It also is a great way to exercise–especially when you leave the golf cart in the shed and walk 9 or 18 holes. Most of the local courses have special rates at least one day of the week or have some kind of senior discount as well. The weekly games become bragging rights at breakfast the next morning, and this is another way to spend those retirement years away from the TV set or rocking chair. Another thing nice is that most of the guys are very flexible in each others’ skill levels so that all feel pretty much at home. There are all kinds of ways to handicap a round and keep it fun and fair. After all, most of these guys play golf for fun and most weren’t on “the tour” before they retired. If you enjoy golf and like to play with a group, just go to one of these courses, usually on Monday morning, and join in. I am sure you will enjoy it.

South Decatur Elementary School has introduced a new fundraising program called My School Color Run. The My School Color Run program aims to go beyond traditional fundraising. Rather than sell goods, the program aims to engage the entire student body in a fitness initiative that aims to instill a life-long healthy way of living. On Sept. 3, at 9 a.m., the students, staff, and community of South Decatur Elementary School will walk, jog, and run their way toward a healthier life while raising funds for the PTO’s Playground Revitalization Project. The color run will be held at South Decatur Jr-Sr High School, and will be open to the public. This is an untimed fun run. Participants will pass through four color stations throughout the course and end with a massive color toss at the My Color Run Post-Race Party. Participants will be treated to refreshments, music, and fun following the run. Interested participants of all ages can register by visiting www.SouthDecaturMSCR.eventbrite.com, or by completing a paper registration form prior to the event. Registration is $25 for adults 13 and older, and $20 for kids 12 and under. A family of five gets a discount at $20 per person. Pre-registration is[...]
