MERRILLVILLE, In. – A police officer in Northwest Indiana has died two days after being shot responding to a call.

Authorities are confirming 24-year-old Merrillville officer Nickolaus Schultz died Sunday morning in an Oak Lawn hospital.

Stultz served on the Merrillville Police Department for one year and was a 2013 Franklin College graduate, where he played football.

He was responding to a complaint regarding an unwanted person in a vacant condo when he was reportedly shot by 33-year-old Michael Hrnciar.

Police say Hrnciar shot the officer before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting marks the second officer to have died on duty in Lake County since July. Gary officer Jeffrey Westerfield, 47, died after being shot in his car on July 6.
