New Scooter Laws Begin in January

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana BMV wants to make sure scooter drivers are aware of new rules beginning January 1.

The BMV has released a video that offers information on how to classify a scooter and also what is lawfully needed to operate it on Hoosier roadways.

Legislation was passed earlier this year requiring scooters to meet certain license requirements.

Beginning in 2015, mopeds and scoters with engines of 50cc or less will be required to have license plates and operators will need to pass a driving test. Those with larger engines will have to follow motorcycle requirements.

The following BMV released video includes:

  • Scooter definitions
  • How to identify engine size
  • What is needed to lawfully operate the scooter
  • Documents to bring to the license branch
