Monday’s snow make-up day set; other school board notes

BATESVILLE, Ind. – Batesville Community School Corporation’s monthly Board of School Trustees meeting went on as scheduled despite the snow day Monday.

The make-up day has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 26.

Batesville High School Spanish Teacher Laura Tucker shared information about a recent BCSC global initiative trip to Spain. Tucker had the opportunity to research the country’s public school system firsthand.

The educator said the goal is have local students corresponding with Spanish students and possibly schedule a student trip there within the next year.

BCSC teacher Grace Kontur is leading the global initiative and announced plans to hold a winter academic camp featuring 23 Chinese students that will travel to Batesville. The students are ages 12 to 15 and the camp will be held February 2-14, 2015.

Batesville superintendent Dr. Jim Roberts announced that the corporation anticipates 3,000 transferable credits awarded to the Class of 2015 as part of the dual credit program with Ivy Tech. It averages out to 17 credits per student which saves parents approximately $1.2 million.

Five student-athletes were recognized during Monday’s board meeting for being named Academic All-State Students. Molly Weigel, Calvin Lehman, and Kelsey Gausman receive the all-state mention for cross country. Volleyball players Avni Patel and Kim Tidman also were honored for succeeding on the court and in the classroom.

Senior Madison McCreary was recognized for selection to the girls golf All-State team.

There are no new developments from the school board in regards to random drug testing. School Board member Cindy Blessing noted she hopes for more input from students as officials consider policy changes.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 17.
