Milan High School graduate Tatijana Marsee had the opportunity to serve as a communications intern in the Indiana House of Representatives during the 2014 General Assembly.

Marsee was one of 38 interns in the House and she worked in a variety of roles focusing specifically on social media.

“I get to work with the legislators one-on-one, providing information on how they can up their social media strategy to reach a bigger demographic of their constituents,” Marsee explained.

“I’ll take the bills and read over them and turn them into more common language for the public to really understand and grasp,” Marsee said. “Then I will shorten it to that Twitter content of 140 characters, then legislators can post that on their website.”

Marsee also filmed and produced audio for intern videos about certain bills.

Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) notified Marsee about the internship opportunity after working with her through the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association. Marsee began participating in the organization during high school and has continued during college years.

“With him being a past firefighter he works a lot with us on legislation and he approached me and said there’s an internship at the statehouse and I think you would be great for it,” Marsee said.

Working first-hand with legislators can bring future opportunities, the 2012 Milan graduated indicated.

Marsee said, “You do not go out and get coffee for the legislators or anything like that, you actually get to do the work.”

“This internship is going to open up an enormous amount of doors for you that you didn’t even realize was possible, it’s not like any other internship you could ever have.”

Marsee is a sophomore at IUPUI majoring in communications. After graduation, she has an interest in pursuing a career through organizations such as the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association, American Heart Association or work as a lobbyist.

“That would be my ultimate goal in life would be able to help just people in general, some local people maybe back home, or anyone really needs that needs that help, I would like to be able to help them at this type of level.”
