Merle and Ted

Two Batesville residents who have run a lot of marathons are Merle Hines and Ted Hartshorn.  Merle recently completed her goal of running a marathon in all 50 states.  Merle was still going strong despite what some would consider the age of retirement.  She is the track and cross country coach for the Oldenburg Twisters who every year develops a very good core of distance runners.

Ted Hartshorn, on the other hand, has had to curtail his competing in marathons.  The 80+ runner at one point competed in 2 or more marathons every year.  Ted has developed problems with his eyesight, so his running is now confined to the YMCA and running in his neighborhood  in the Chateau section of Batesville.

Both of these runners have run marathons outside of the United States, and each could give you hours of stories about some of their trips to marathon sights.  I know Ted survived a snow storm in getting back from an Eastern shore marathon.  A true runner will not let weather or travel problems keep them from running 26.2 miles–just because they like to do it!
