Locker Room Banter

Much has been debated about the situation with the Miami Dolphins.  We do not know all that went on in that locker room and probably never will.  However, the ordinary person has no idea what language goes on in any locker room much less one with athletes playing at the highest level of their sport.  In high school it is the typical playground jargon and jabs that kids like to aggravate their classmates with.  As long as it is two-way banter it is not bullying.  As the athletes get older, the bantering gets more pointed, and thus, some of the barbs are beyond annoying.  Here again, calling someone a “sissy’ if he is a 300-pound lineman is not flatttering, but I’m sure the 300 pounder will come back with something just as taunting.  This is typical, and as long as things like the “N” word are not prevalent, it is not a big deal.  It is really stupid, but almost every athlete at some level either experiences it or has been an instigator in it.  If the young Dolphin player truly found himself with high anxiety issues when he entered the locker room, then this went way beyond “typical” jock vocabulary.  I believe he should not have left the Dolphins without conferring with someone in a management position, normally the head coach.
