Local police attend seminar to better understand PTSD

BATESVILLE, Ind. – Local police agencies are becoming better suited to respond to cases involving a person suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The Batesville Police Department hosted a training seminar at the Ivy Tech campus in Batesville on Thursday that included local and state law enforcement agencies, hospitals, schools and EMT’s.

Seminar instructor Silouan Green was involved in a jet training accident while serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. Silouan suffered a broken back and his co-pilot was killed.

The veteran has since launched multiple businesses and an organization devoted to PTSD victims.

“A survivor of a tragic jet crash as a US Marine and someone who overcame severe PTSD, he understands personally the kind of issues veterans face coming home and how to respond to them,” Batesville Police Chief Stan Holt said.

The class was held to allow officers to better understand the disorder and prepare to respond to threatening situations.

“Combat veterans and police officers have similar lifetime rates of conditions like PTSD, and a resilient police department is the best way to prepare to respond to veterans,” stated Holt.

The seminar was conducted by the Public Agency Training Council of Indianapolis which is the largest privately held law enforcement training company in the nation.
