Lisa Gausman

Lisa Gausman is the head track coach at BHS. She took over for Leo Turchyn a few years back after coaching for several years at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis. Lisa was a student at BHS when I was coaching at Batesville. You watch kids perform and some are naturals and others are good because they work extra hard to get to that level. These are the ones you hope return as a coach. Lisa is one of those and it sure has paid dividends. This year she has almost 100 kids running track, and last year won the EIAC boys’ conference title for the first time in 30 years. Kids like to run for Lisa, and she is not only a good judge of talent but can make kids do what is best for them even if they cannot always see it themselves. It is not enough just to know your stuff, which she knows very well, but be able to pass it on to your students. Second, she can make a hard workout seem to be not so hard so they will do it and come back for more. There is a fine line between being a friend and cracking the whip at the same time. Lisa walks this line very well. Look for this years’ Bulldog squad to do quite well again in the EIAC and the state series. Just take a look at what Ellie Tidman, Chris Giesting, and Hayden Merkel have done in the past several state meets. I know I am having fun helping Lisa each spring and being able to keep my hand in the program just a little bit in my retirement years. Good luck to Lisa and her Bulldogs the rest of the way!
