Joseph C. Ratz, age 86, of Brookville, Indiana died Thursday, January 16, 2014 at his residence.

Born August 26, 1927 in Franklin County, Indiana he was the son of the late Joseph W. & Margaret Mary (Tulley) Ratz.  Joe was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.  On September 14, 1957 he and the former Dorothy J. Hertel were united in marriage, and she survives.

Joe owned & operated the former Ratz Brothers filling station in Brookville with his brother, for over 44 years.  He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Brookville; the Knights of Columbus Council #1010 of Brookville; as well as the Bernard Hurst Post #77 of the American Legion.

Besides Dorothy, his wife of over 56 years, survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Cox of Brookville, Indiana; a son, Todd (Kris) Ratz of Brookville, Indiana; four grandchildren; three step-granddaughters; one great-grandson; two step great-grandchildren three sisters, Patricia Moody of Batesville, Indiana; Alice Gesell of Brookville, Indiana and Yvonne Hornbach of Harrison, Ohio; two brothers, William “Bill” Ratz and Tom Ratz, both of Brookville, Indiana.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gregory D. Ratz who died in 1976; three sisters, Doris Ratz, Delores Bossert and Irene Bruns; and two brothers, Eugene Ratz and David Ratz.

Rev. Sean Danda, pastor of St. Michaels Catholic Church, will officiate the Funeral Services at 11:00 A.M., Monday, January 20, 2014 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home in Brookville.  Burial with Full Military Graveside Honors by the Bernard Hurst Post #77 of the American Legion will follow in St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Brookville.

Family & friends may visit from 9:00 until 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home, 1025 Franklin Avenue, Brookville.

The Batesville United Methodist Church, in partnership with Margaret Mary Health, will soon be offering a cancer support group whose goal is to ensure access to valuable community resources to those living with cancer. The group will also provide hope, encouragement, education and sanctuary. HOPE will meet on the last Thursday of each month at 5:30 PM at the Batesville United Methodist Church and will feature a guest speaker, time for topic discussion and fellowship. The Batesville community and beyond are invited to attend! The first session is scheduled for Thursday, June 26 and will feature a discussion around the emotional rollercoaster of cancer and the fear of recurrence.
