Jennings Co. Receives Wastewater Grant, Liberty Turned Down

JENNINGS COUNTY – Twelve Indiana communities are receiving grants totaling $5.4 million through the Wastewater and Drinking Water Program by the Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann announces Jennings County as a recipient of $550,000 to upgrade a wastewater treatment facility near Hayden.

The project is estimated to cost $3.2 million and the county had raised $2.6 million before receiving the half of a million dollar grant from the state.

The grant program is available to communities for a variety of infrastructure improvements to enable long-term growth. Each grant must have a match of local funds and meet certain grant requirements.

In announcing the grants, Lt. Governor Ellspermann noted, “Indiana’s rural and smaller cities and towns are important to the overall economic and social fabric of our state. Through this specific program and others, we want to help these communities remain attractive places to live, raise families and operate businesses.”

The Richmond Pal-Item is reporting that the town of Liberty applied for $320,000 through the grant program, but was one of twenty that did not receive a grant.
