1987 graduate Scott Smith, Batesville, has been named recipient of the Southeast Region’s Alumni Achievement Award at Ivy Tech Community College. Smith is one of 14 alumni recognized statewide.

Smith holds an Associate of Science degree in accounting from Ivy Tech’s Madison campus and completed a Bachelor’s degree in history and in business administration at Northern Kentucky University, Highland Heights, Kentucky, in 1991. He is currently the Chief Financial Officer of Bruns-Gutzwiller, Inc., a large Batesville construction company.

Smith originally accepted an offer to play basketball for the Danville Community College Jaguars, Danville, Illinois. However, he and wife, Vicki, left Danville after one semester to return closer to home. He continues his interest in athletics as coach of the Jac-Cen-Del High School girls’ basketball team in Osgood.

Smith says he was able to advance from bookkeeper to CEO because the owners of Bruns-Gutzwiller recognized the value of his Ivy Tech education.

“Ivy Tech gave me an opportunity to expand my educational horizon when opportunities for non-traditional students were few.” He added, Ivy Tech has “made an indelible mark on my life.”

Ironically, Smith has been a part of Bruns-Gutzwiller’s construction of Ivy Tech projects in Lawrenceburg, Richmond, Columbus and Madison.

Smith and his wife are the parents of four children.
