GREENSBURG — Airport officials are considering upgrades to the facility’s automated weather station.

A medical flight company recommended the upgrades to the airport claiming it would substantially improve the aviation safety operations around the area, the Greensburg Daily News reports.

An Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) would relay weather information more quickly helping pilot’s combat Indiana’s ever-changing weather pattern.

Currently, the closest AWOS is located in Columbus. Without the system medical flights depend on forecasts updated three times a day, according to the newspaper.

Airport Board President Jon Dooley supports the idea saying the updated weather system would benefit medical, commercial, private flights and all Greensburg residents.

AWOS comes with a cost of about 200-thousand dollars to install and an additional $5,600 a year for upkeep.

Officials tabled the decision and will likely discuss it more at a future board meeting.
