A former treasurer for the Milan youth football league was arrested and charged with 19 counts of theft, all related to her work with the organization from early 2009-August 2012.

Margaret West, 40, of Moores Hill was apprehended on Thursday, Jan 9.

A Ripley County prosecutor said the first allegation was made in 2010 with the last occurring in July 2012.

In 2011, West was replaced by another elected treasurer, however she kept control of the league checkbook, The Versailles Republican reports. When financial records were turned over in 2012 league officials discovered inconsistencies.

Authorities allege West used around $8,000 of league finances on 19 different occasions. Instances include debit card transactions for personal use, ATM withdrawals and writing checks payable to Margie West.

She is due in court on Jan. 28. If convicted of theft, as a class D felony, a three year jail sentence could be handed down.

Milan youth football officials told the Versailles Republican that the league has since rebounded. Last year, about 113 children were involved which is nearly double from the prior year. The league is now more transparent and requires both the treasurer and president to sign off on all checks.
