Flags were directed at half-staff Wednesday in honor of a city employee.

Flags are at half-staff across the nation as part of Peace Officers Memorial Day, which honors officers killed or disabled in the line of duty.

President Obama signed a proclamation ordering flags nationwide to be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset Thursday.

In Batesville, flags have been at half-mast since Wednesday for another reason as the community remembers a city employee.

Mark Eckstein worked at Batesville Water and Gas Utility for 26 years as a service technician and welder. He passed away Tuesday at the age of 43.

A visitation will be held at Weigel Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday. Funeral arrangements will be held at St. Maurice Church in Napoleon at 10:00 a.m. Friday.
