Authorities confirm that U.S. 50 through North Vernon has reopened.

NORTH VERNON, Ind. – Fire crews from several counties responded to a blaze in downtown North Vernon Friday morning.

The blaze reportedly started at the Hatton Carpet building which marks the second fire there this month.

We’re receiving reports that the fire has spread to other buildings along the south side of 5th Street.

The Red Cross reports 22 residents that reside in apartments have been displaced by the fire.

Authorities advise drivers to avoid downtown as U.S. 50 is closed at State Road 3 and State Road 7.

Agencies we see on the scene include fire departments from Jennings, Jackson, Jefferson, and Bartholomew counties.

The Red Cross, Salvation Army and United Way are working to help the families and also provide additional services to first responders.

The fire has not caused any injuries, sources say.
